The second weekend of racing at the Milan-Cortina Olympics brings us the giant slalom, the first technical event on the calendar.

Marco Odermatt, who was aiming for a poker of Olympic golds in Milan-Cortina, is still the favorite, even more so in this event which is truly his.
He was aiming, yes, because not even making the podium in the downhill right from the start, he had to put aside his triumphant intentions. Even more so after the silver in the combined.
Behind him, however, for the giant slalom, the fight is, on paper, only for second place.

The most interesting odds are undoubtedly those for the Nordic-Brazilian Pinheiro, a skier who is proving to be in great form this season and even capable of challenging Odermatt for the giant slalom World Cup. For the overall title, however, it’s practically impossible.
Pinheiro is considered the third favorite, but the motivation to bring the first medal (perhaps gold) to Brazil in the history of the Winter Olympic Games is truly enticing. That said, he will focus much more on the slalom.

In the giant slalom standings this season, as mentioned, it’s a battle for now between Odermatt and Pinheiro, although in terms of wins, Meillard with 2 successes is the one to watch: he is indeed the second favorite.
For the Italians, there would be Vinatzer, with odds around 21-23, worthy of a top 10.
Women’s Giant Slalom: Favorites, Odds, and Predictions
On Sunday, it’s the women’s turn in Milan-Cortina. Here, the favorite according to the odds is even clearer, and it’s Julia Scheib, who practically only competes in this discipline. Four wins this season for the Austrian, and bookmakers are unanimous in giving her odds below 3, even. Worthy of an Odermatt.
Of course, it must be said that Scheib has exploded this year and is not very young (born in 1998), so she might feel the Olympic pressure of having to win, given that she has no medals at the Games in her career.

The Olimpia delle Tofane has hosted few giant slaloms in its history, certainly many fewer than downhill or Super-G races. The last time in 2021, Lara Gut-Behrami (out in Milan-Cortina due to injury) won ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin, and before that, we have to go back to the very distant 2010.
Shiffrin is the “elephant in the room” for this giant slalom race in Milan-Cortina. She started these Games slowly; seeing her at these odds is truly inviting: and she is still the undisputed leader of the overall World Cup standings.
Another to watch, more than our Brignone who seems to have arrived at this event just to participate after her terrible injury last April, is the New Zealander Robinson, another giant slalom specialist with 3 wins this season already to her name, and with odds ranging from 7.50 to 12 for the win in Milan-Cortina.
