Fantasy football defense modifier: what it is, how it works, when and how to use it

Fantasy football has evolved a lot over the years, so much so that it has introduced increasingly particular and sophisticated rules to make the experience as technical as possible: one example above all is the fantasy football defense modifier.

In this guide, we will try to explain what it is, how it is applied, and how to use it to your advantage, choosing the most suitable players to increase your chances of getting a bonus that can become decisive in the long run.

Fantasy football defense modifier: how it works

Applying this rule is very simple. The fantasy football defense modifier is calculated using the goalkeeper’s average rating + the ratings of at least 4 defenders fielded, without considering any bonuses or penalties. Essentially, to benefit from the fantasy football defense modifier, you must play with at least a 4-man defense, otherwise you cannot access it.

To summarize:

✔ Yes to a 4 or 5-man defense.
❌ No to a 3-man defense.

Fantasy football defense bonus: how to calculate it

Let’s take an example to understand how to calculate the fantasy football defense bonus. Suppose your team is set up in a 4-3-3 formation, hypothetically with Falcone in goal, then Akanji, Bellanova, Hien and Romagnoli. The defense is 4-man, so you can access the modifier.

Falcone concedes two goals but makes important saves and gets a good 6.5: it doesn’t matter that his net was bulged on two occasions, because for the fantasy football defense modifier, only the rating counts.

The defenders, on the other hand, get ratings of 6.5, 5, 6, and 6.5 respectively. Specifically, to summarize:

  • Falcone 6.5
  • Akanji 6.5
  • Bellanova 5
  • Hien 6
  • Romagnoli 6.5

Bellanova had a bad game and deserved a below-average rating, but it’s not a big deal: the fantasy football defense bonus is triggered by considering the 3 best defenders plus the goalkeeper, so for this purpose, Akanji’s and Romagnoli’s two 6.5s and Hien’s 6 are valid.

To recap, with the defensive department, we have collected three 6.5s (Falcone, Akanji, and Romagnoli) and one 6 (Hien). Adding them up, we get an excellent 25.5, which divided by 4 players is 6.375.

Okay, but how much is the bonus worth?

The answer is that… it depends. Nowadays, there are various websites and programs that allow you to play fantasy football, each with its own rules and its own “range” applied to the defense modifier. On Fantacalcio.it, for example, in private leagues, you can set the bonus ranges yourself.

To give you an example, in some leagues, the defense modifier is applied as follows:

  • Average rating from 6 to 6.24: +1
  • Average rating from 6.25 to 6.49: +2
  • Average rating from 6.50 to 6.74: +3
  • Average rating from 6.75 to 6.99: +4
  • Average rating from 7 upwards: +5

In others, however, the brackets are calculated by awarding only 1, 3, or 6 points:

  • Average rating from 6 to 6.49: +1
  • Average rating from 6.5 to 6.99: +3
  • Average rating from 7 to 7.49: +6

Is it worth using the modifier?

Here too, there is no single answer. It is clear that much depends on which and how many bonuses are applied. In the first example above, it might be worth investing in the defense and playing with 4 defenders, because with an average of 6.25 (i.e., with two 6s and two 6.5s) you would get 2 points.

Logically, in a fantasy football league with a global score ranking (i.e., the sum of each matchday’s score), even getting an average of 1 extra point per matchday thanks to the defense can be very useful in the long run.

Which defenders to buy to play with the defense modifier?

If you are not completely new to fantasy football, you will already know that there are two categories of defenders whose cost is very high and for which an important auction often breaks out:

  • Attacking full-backs
  • Center-backs with a knack for scoring

Attacking full-backs, like Dumfries for example, are players skilled in the offensive phase and therefore capable of scoring goals or providing assists. Center-backs with a knack for scoring, like Bremer, are very strong on set pieces and can bring decent bonuses.

However, both these categories are not without their problems. An attacking full-back is usually not the best in defense: when they don’t manage to get a bonus, they can end up with a negative rating, when they fail to contain the opponent’s attacks on their flank. Center-backs with a knack for scoring, on the other hand, often play for second-tier teams, which suffer many attacks from opposing teams, thus exposing themselves more to a less-than-excellent rating.

The compromise? Reliable center-backs

Acerbi, Tomori, Ghilardi, Mancini, and so on, are players who rarely score and, for this reason, their price rarely rises significantly at auction. However, they are players who almost always manage to get an average rating or slightly better, because they are very focused for the entire 90 minutes and good at marking.

If you play with the defense modifier but don’t want to go crazy for a Dumfries or Dimarco, saving some fantasy credits to invest in midfield and attack, buying this type of center-back can be a good solution.

Fantasy football and Sisal: a new integration for fantasy managers

Since the beginning of 2026, there is a new development concerning the integration between Fantacalcio.it and

Sisal (betting)
which allows fantasy managers to associate their Fantacalcio.it profile with their Sisal gaming account directly from the reserved area. The operation does not change the functioning of fantasy football in any way, but it allows access to initiatives dedicated to users.

In particular, upon the first association of the profile, Sisal Point are credited, while through the “Invite Friends” program, you can receive up to 20 euros in bonus upon fulfillment of the required conditions. Furthermore, if all participants in a league complete the profile association, an additional Connection Bonus can be unlocked.

Specifically, the bonuses provided are:

  • Profile Association Bonus: upon the first association of the Fantacalcio profile with the Sisal gaming account, a bonus of 550 Sisal Points is credited. These points are part of the Sisal loyalty program and can be used to obtain benefits or bonuses according to the program’s conditions.

  • “Invite Friends” Program: once the accounts are linked, users can invite friends from their league who are not yet registered on Sisal; upon completion of certain actions by the friend (document validation, deposit, and first bet), the user can receive up to €20 in total bonus through the accumulation of Sisal Points.

  • League Connection Bonus: if all participants in the same Fantacalcio league link their profile to their Sisal account, an extra bonus is unlocked, currently set at €2 Freebet for each member of the league.

Ratings, formations, modifiers (like the defense modifier), and league rules remain unchanged and continue to be managed on the fantasy football platforms, making this integration an accessory element compared to the game itself.
